January 2025: Human Being Basics

We’re starting the new year by grounding ourselves in what every human needs to feel steady, whole, and alive. Beyond food, water, and shelter, our core psychological needs shape how we show up in the world — and when they’re met, we flourish. This month, we’ll explore Love, Safety, and Dignity as the foundations of wellbeing, and notice where they’re nurtured… and where they may need tending.

LOVE

To feel wanted, welcomed, embraced; to know you belong.

SAFETY

To be free from threat, protected from harm; to feel secure now and in the future.

DIGNITY

To be seen, heard, and valued; to feel your worth reflected back to you.

When these needs are met, we feel…

Awe · Calm · Capable · Comfortable · Confident · Empowered · Energized · Free · Fulfilled · Generous · Gracious · Grateful · Grounded · Happy · Hopeful · Inspired · Optimistic · Peaceful · Proud · Radiant · Relaxed · Satisfied · Understood · Validated

When these needs go unmet, we feel…

Angry · Anxious · Confused · Defensive · Discouraged · Fearful · Frustrated · Helpless · Hopeless · Humiliated · Hurt · Impatient · Irritated · Isolated · Nervous · Overwhelmed · Regretful · Rejected · Resentful · Shattered · Uncomfortable · Worthless · Vindictive

PROMPTS

Use these questions to check in with yourself as we begin the year.

  • When did you notice yourself feeling seen, heard, or valued, and what made that possible?

  • What situations or relationships help you feel safe?

  • What simple routines or environments help you return to yourself?

  • Which inner capacity — Love, Safety, or Dignity — do you want to strengthen as you move forward in this new year?

PRACTICE

Set aside 3–5 quiet minutes.Place a hand somewhere comfortable — chest, belly, or simply on your lap.Take one slow breath.

Then move through the three prompts below, pausing briefly after each one.

1. Love — “What helps me feel welcomed today?”

Notice one gesture, memory, or interaction that brings a sense of warmth or belonging.Let it land in your body for a moment.

2. Safety — “What helps me feel steady today?”

Name something that grounds you — a routine, a place, a person, or a choice that brings ease.Breathe into that steadiness.

3. Dignity — “What helps me remember my worth today?”

Recall something that reflects your value back to you — a strength, a contribution, or a truth you know about yourself.Let that recognition settle.

Finish with one slow exhale.
